Youth Fight Prompts Dispersal Order in Southend City Centre

Southend city centre was shaken Tuesday evening (April 15) as a violent altercation involving a group of youths erupted on Queens Road, right next to the bustling Molo Lounge. The incident took place around 5:30pm — during a busy time with many residents shopping, commuting, or heading out for dinner.

Eyewitnesses reported at least four youths involved in the fight, prompting a rapid response from Essex Police. Officers were on the scene within a minute of the first 999 call. While no injuries were reported, a bladed weapon was recovered, heightening community concern.

To ensure public safety and restore calm, police enacted a Section 35 dispersal order under the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. This emergency measure gives officers the authority to move individuals from the area if they suspect their behavior could lead to further disorder.

The order came into effect shortly after the incident and will remain in place until 7pm on Wednesday, April 16. It covers a wide zone across Southend’s High Street and city centre.

Residents and visitors can expect to see increased police patrols throughout the duration of the order.

What Police Are Saying

Inspector Steven Baker of Essex Police stated:

“We’ve been hugely helped by the public following this earlier disorder, which we believe involved individuals known to one another. We simply will not tolerate this kind of behaviour in Southend. This dispersal order will not affect the vast majority of good, law-abiding people — but it will help us prevent further incidents and hold those responsible accountable.”

Local Reaction

A local shop owner, who requested to remain anonymous, said:

“It was shocking to see something like that in broad daylight. I think the dispersal order makes sense — if it keeps things from getting worse.”

Ongoing Investigation

Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made yet, and investigations are still ongoing. Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Essex Police directly or anonymously via Crimestoppers.
