Shocking Footage Raises Concerns Over Ongoing Anti-Social Behaviour
A violent altercation between two women was recently captured on video in Southend City Centre, drawing renewed attention to public safety in the area.
Footage Sparks Public Concern
The incident, which occurred on the busy high street, shows a physical fight breaking out between two women, with bystanders watching in shock. A witness, who asked to remain anonymous, confirmed that the main female aggressor was arrested by Essex Police shortly after the altercation.
While no serious injuries have been reported, the video has raised alarm over ongoing anti-social behaviour, despite previous progress in reducing such incidents.
Crime Down, But Concerns Remain
In January, Essex Police reported that anti-social behaviour in Southend had almost halved in 2023 compared to the previous year. Authorities attributed this to ongoing patrols, increased CCTV coverage, and a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) that prohibits disruptive behaviours such as drug use, street drinking, and harassment.
Southend City Council’s community safety officers continue to patrol the high street, providing a visible deterrent and support to residents and businesses.
“Southend Safe Space” & Purple Flag Recognition
To address ongoing safety concerns, particularly from women and vulnerable individuals, a “Southend Safe Space” was launched in July. Open every Friday and Saturday from 8pm to 4am, it provides immediate assistance and a place of safety for anyone in need.
The space is staffed by a multi-agency team including:
-
Southend Community Policing Team
-
Council Community Safety Officers
-
Open Road drug & alcohol support charity
-
Street Pastors
In a show of recognition for its efforts, Southend was awarded the Purple Flag accreditation for the 11th consecutive year, honouring towns and cities with a safe, vibrant night-time economy.
What’s Next?
Despite the positive statistics, this incident reminds the public and local authorities that ongoing vigilance is essential. Ensuring safety, visibility, and rapid response remain top priorities for maintaining peace in Southend’s city centre.
