It’s understood that a member of the public decided to cut down the flags in a counter protest against the national movement that is known as “Raising the colors”.

Southend City Council have said that they would only remove flags in occasions where they either cause an obstruction or when they fall into poor condition.

Councillor Daniel Cowan, leader of the council said: “Under this administration, the focus for Southend is building civic pride. We’re proud of our city, and we’re proud of our country. We encourage national and local pride.
“Flags of any kind will only be removed in the rare occasions where they either cause an obstruction or when they fall into poor condition because tatty flags doesn’t align with our values of pride and belonging.
“We are also working on how to improve our own use of flags and other civic pride decorations. We’ve always said that we’re building a city to be proud of, that takes time, but we know we can do it together.”
